WINTER COCKTAILS

November 07, 2013

With the Winter months creeping up slowly and the Holiday season nearing, it is important to be prepared. I think the best way to be prepared is with Winter cocktail recipes. The latest book I recommend for all cocktail lovers or party hosts to get is called Winter Cocktails by Maria del Mar Sacasa. It holds over one hundred different recipe variations and range from hot to cold and before dinner to after dinner drinks. I think for any host it is important to have a signature cocktail prepared for guests to try, especially around Christmas. Yes of course you can stick with the classics, wine, beer and eggnog but wouldn't it be nice to have a hot Mulled Wine Cocktail on the menu as well?

I recommend you try this delicious after dinner drink: Hot Cranberry Punch with Sage and Peppercorns

HOT CRANBERRY PUNCH WITH SAGE AND PEPPERCORNS
Serves 4 to 8
2 teaspoons black peppercorns
2 cups frozen or fresh cranberries
1/4 cup honey
1 (750-milliliter) bottle dry Riesling, divided
1/4 cup fresh sage leaves
1 cup Benedictine liqueur
Place peppercorns in a medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add cranberries, honey, and 1 cup Riesling and simmer over medium heat until thick and syrupy and some of the liquid has evaporated, about 7 minutes.
Smash cranberries with a fork. Add the remaining wine and sage, and simmer for about 5 minutes. Strain the mixture, smashing the cranberries once more, then discard solids. (At this point the strained mixture can be covered and refrigerated for up to 3 days.)
To serve, add the Benedictine liqueur and warm over low heat until steaming. Serve in warm cups.
Do you have a Winter cocktail that you prepare for guests? If so I would love the recipe!
